A normal polarity chron in the late Pliocene, preceded by the Gilbert and followed by the Matuyama reversed chrons, and radiometrically dated at 3.58–2.60 Ma ago (Harland et al., 1982). The Gauss contains at least two reversed polarity subchrons: Mammoth and Kaena.
