A nonlinear function used to correct the brightness of image pixels to compensate for the fact that the response of cameras to changing levels of brightness is different from that of the human eye. For the case where values range from zero (black) to one (white), the correction formula can be written as
$b_{c o r r} = b^{γ}$
where b is the camera brightness value and b_corr is the corrected display value, and γ is the gamma correction value. Typical values of γ for computer displays range from 1.8 to 2.2.
