单词 reverse osmosis
释义
reverse osmosis

Physics
  • A method of obtaining pure water from water containing a salt, as in desalination. Pure water and the salt water are separated by a semipermeable membrane and the pressure of the salt water is raised above the osmotic pressure, causing water from the brine to pass through the membrane into the pure water. This process requires a pressure of some 25 atmospheres, which makes it difficult to apply on a large scale. The process is used for the purification of drinking water.

Chemical Engineering
  • A process in which liquid flows through a semi-permeable membrane used to separate two solutions. The most concentrated solution is a pressure above that of the osmotic pressure. This causes the liquid to flow from the more concentrated solution to the less concentrated solution. A common use of reverse osmosis is water purification from seawater.
