A retraction of a topological space X to a subspace Y⊆X is a continuous function r:X→Y such that r(y) = y for all y ∊ Y, and Y is referred to as a retract of X. Every continuous function f:A→Z can then be extended to g:X→Z, where g = f ∘ r.
