A device for producing images of high-energy photons. It consists of one or more arrays of tiny hollow glass tubes, typically 12.5–25 μ‎m in diameter and 1–2 mm long, each operating as an individual photomultiplier. Around 10 million tubes are stacked side by side to form a thin plate structure. These microchannel plates can be used singly or stacked in pairs or triplets to detect ultraviolet, extreme ultraviolet, and X-ray photons directly, when coated with a suitable material. They are also used as optical image intensifiers in combination with a phosphor screen.
