A device for producing images of high-energy photons. It consists of one or more arrays of tiny hollow glass tubes, typically 12.5–25 μm in diameter and 1–2 mm long, each operating as an individual photomultiplier. Around 10 million tubes are stacked side by side to form a thin plate structure. These microchannel plates can be used singly or stacked in pairs or triplets to detect ultraviolet, extreme ultraviolet, and X-ray photons directly, when coated with a suitable material. They are also used as optical image intensifiers in combination with a phosphor screen.
