Any animal organ across which exchange of carbon dioxide and oxygen takes place. The surface membranes of such organs are always moist, thin, and well supplied with blood. Examples are the lungs of air-breathing vertebrates, the gills of fish, the tracheae of insects, and the lung books of arachnids.
