The fourth-closest satellite of Neptune, distance 61 953 km, orbital period 0.429 days; also known as Neptune VI. Galatea orbits between the Arago and Adams rings and probably acts as a shepherd moon for the latter. There is in addition a faint ring of debris along Galatea’s orbit. Its diameter is 176 km, and it was discovered in 1989 from images taken with the Voyager 2 spacecraft.
