A non‐negative continuous distribution formed from the ratio of the distributions of two independent random variables with chi‐squared distributions, each divided by its degrees of freedom. The mean is and the variance is , where ν1 and ν2 are the degrees of freedom of the numerator and denominator respectively. It is used to test the hypothesis that two normally distributed random variables have the same variance and in regression to test the relationship between an explanatory variable and the dependent variable. The distribution is skewed to the right.
