1. (mathematics) A part of a whole, expressed as a ratio of the number of equal parts into which the whole has been divided. If the whole is divided into three equal parts (fractions), for instance, one of those fractions would be expressed as the ratio ⅓ and two of them as ⅔.
2. (chemistry) A quantity extracted from a sample by a process of fractionation, commonly by heating the sample to boil off its ingredients in order of their volatility and collecting each of them by distillation.
