He joined the International Workers of the World in 1909, and after organizing the steelworkers’ strike in the Chicago area in 1919, became a member of the newly formed US Communist Party. He ran as its presidential candidate in 1924, 1928, and 1932, and in 1945, after the discrediting of Earl Browder, the Party’s war-time leader, became its chairman. He died in Moscow.
