A cluster of galaxies about 60 million light years away in the southern constellation Fornax. It is the largest nearby cluster of galaxies to us after the Virgo Cluster. The Fornax Cluster is smaller and denser than the Virgo Cluster, with about one-tenth the mass, about one-fifth the number of galaxies and less than half the diameter. Prominent members include the supergiant elliptical NGC 1399 at the cluster’s heart, the radio galaxy NGC 1316 (also known as Fornax A) on the cluster’s outskirts, and the barred spiral NGC 1365. A smaller group of galaxies, including NGC 1404 and NGC 1427A, appears to be colliding and merging with the main Fornax Cluster.
