An important and practical family of linear error-correcting block codes, especially suited to the correction of burst errors. They can be regarded as a generalization of Bose–Chaudhuri–Hocquenghem (BCH) codes, and as a special case of Goppa codes. RS codes can be arranged to be cyclic.
