单词 redundancy
释义
redundancy

Mathematics
  • In coding, the presence of code, such as checksums, that is surplus to the encoded message but provides means to error-detect or error-correct. The term also relates to unintentional redundancy where a code is simply suboptimal.

Space Exploration
  • The condition of having back-up equipment and instruments. Main units might fail during the lifetime of a mission, and the most crucial devices have redundant back-ups. They can be programmed to function automatically in such situations, or can be activated by real-time commanding. Redundancy is used for such equipment as antennae, gyroscopes, and transmitters and receivers. The lifetime of a number of spacecraft has been extended by redundancy, including the Voyager, Galileo, and Pioneer probes.

Computer
  • The provision of additional components in a system, over and above the minimum set of components needed to perform the functions of the system, for purposes of reliability or robustness. For example, with triple modular redundancy three components are deployed in parallel, all performing the same function. Their outputs are compared, and when one component produces a different result from the other two, this item is assumed to be faulty and is ignored. Redundancy covers not only the incorporation of duplicate or triplicate hardware for backup in case of failure, but also the inclusion of excess symbols in messages sent through communication systems in order to combat the effects of noise (see error-correcting code, error-detecting code).

Electronics and Electrical Engineering
  • 1. The fraction of the information in a transmission system that may be eliminated without loss of essential information. The excess information is often deliberately included to allow for loss in the transmission system.

    2. The extra components, devices, or circuits included in an electronic circuit or apparatus to increase the reliability of the system. If therefore a fault develops in one portion of the system the redundant circuits or components provided can take over the function of the faulty part. Redundancy is very important in systems, such as aircraft systems, in which high reliability is essential.

Economics
  • Termination of employment without any fault on the part of the employees concerned, because of a fall in the employer’s need for labour. Some UK workers have a legal right to compensation for redundancy. Employers may make redundancy payments in excess of legal requirements to induce workers to accept offers of voluntary redundancy and so avoid the need for compulsory redundancies.
