The first project to involve the public in a planetary exploration mission. In 2000, the Planetary Society and the LEGO Company conducted a worldwide essay competition for students (9–15 years old) with competitors elected as student scientists and student navigators. The winners used data from the Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) and Viking missions to choose a possible landing site on the planet Mars. They then went to Malin Space Science Systems in San Diego, California, to create commands for the MGS Mars Orbiter Camera to take images of the chosen site.
