A continuous, sub-planar rock fabric formed by the preferred orientation of minerals with a generally platy or tabular habit. The layers are planar, and parallel but not necessarily to bedding or cleavage. The term ‘foliation’ is commonly applied to textures in high-grade metamorphic rocks (see metamorphic grade).
