A marine fish (family Exocoetidae) that has long, strong, pectoral fins which enable it to glide through the air, having leapt from the surface to escape a predator. Depending on the wind and updraughts, a flying fish may remain airborne for more than 40 seconds, flying at more than 70 km/h and covering up to 400 m at an altitude of up to 6 m. There are about 108 species, found worldwide, especially in tropical and subtropical waters.
