单词 recycling
释义
recycling

Biology
  • 1. The recovery and processing of materials after they have been used, which enables them to be reused. For example, used paper, cans, and glass can be broken down into their constituents, which form the raw materials for the manufacture of new products.

    2. The continual movement of essential elements between the biotic (living) and abiotic (nonliving) components of the environment. See carbon cycle; nitrogen cycle; oxygen cycle; phosphorus cycle; sulphur cycle.

Geography
  • The reuse of renewable resources in an effort to maximize their value, reduce waste, and reduce environmental disturbance. A cycle economy, based on the economical and responsible treatment of limited resources (Seliger et al. (2001) CIRP Anns.—Manuf. Ind. 51, 1) is a key concept of today’s Japanese environmental policy (Kenichi (2002) Mining & Materials Processing Inst. Japan 118, 9). Williams and Kelly (2003) Resources, Conserv. & Recycl. 38, 2 evaluate public perception of local authority recycling, and Asomi-Boateng (2007) J. Plan. Ed. & Res. 27, 2 reports that waste-based urban cultivation in Ghana could minimize waste collection and disposal costs.

Economics
  • The reuse of goods which have served their original purpose: for example, empty bottles or worn-out motor vehicles. Recycling is advocated on both cost-saving and environmental grounds, as it reduces both the need for extractive industries and the dumping of waste products.
