from New Zealand whose career has been largely spent in England. Whittle held posts at U Uppsala (1950) where he obtained his PhD, in the New Zealand Department for Scientific and Industrial Research (1953), at Cambridge U (1959), and U Manchester (1961). In 1967 he returned to Cambridge U as Professor of Operational Research. He was elected FRS in 1978 and FRSNZ in 1981. He was the IMS Neyman Lecturer in 1990. Whittle was awarded the Guy Medal in Silver of the RSS in 1966 and the Guy Medal in Gold in 1996.
