A very fine structure on the Sun’s photosphere, consisting of tiny bright dots arranged along the dark lanes separating granules. Sometimes there is a clustering of such dots to form crinkles. The smallest dots are about 150 km across and last for less than 30 min. The filigree structures are hotter (by a few hundred degrees K) than the surrounding photosphere in which they are located, and mark sites of strong (0.1 tesla) magnetic field. They are visible in spectroheliograms made in weak Fraunhofer lines or the line wings of the Ηα‎ line.
