He logged over 1 560 hours in space during five space shuttle flights, including the Atlantis mission in February 2001 to assemble and supply the International Space Station (ISS), and the Endeavour flight in June 2002 to the ISS to exchange resident crews and bring the Canadian mobile base for the robot arm. He went on to become a manager in the Flight Crew Operations Directorate at the Johnson Space Center. He joined the Johnson Space Center as an instructor pilot for the T-38 jet trainer in 1987, and was selected as an astronaut in 1990.
