Australian settlers opposed to the emancipation of ex-convicts. The name was applied in New South Wales, during the period of convict transportation, to those people who opposed the restoration of civil rights to ex-convicts or emancipists. The exclusives were composed for the most part of civil and military officials and of gentleman squatters and settlers who were called in derision “Pure Merinos”.
