a Rhode Island militia captain in King Philip’s War (1675–76). He cornered Philip in the Great Swamp near Kingston, destroying the remnant of his force. In 1705 he joined a New England expedition against the French in Nova Scotia. His Entertaining Passages Relating to King Philip’s War appeared in 1716.
His grandson, Benjamin (1734–76), was a leading Boston doctor and patriot who in 1775 betrayed the American cause to the British. Paroled from life imprisonment, he died en route to the West Indies.
