Mathematics

  • The process of determining as nearly as possible the value of a population parameter by using an estimator. The value of an estimator found from a particular sample is called an estimate.

Statistics

  • The process of using a mathematical formula, or formulae, to calculate from observed data a value, or values, for an unknown parameter, or parameters. Three common methods are the method of least squares, the method of maximum likelihood, and the method of moments. See also Bayesian inference; resampling.

Chemical Engineering

  • A solution to a problem that is deemed to be sufficiently close to the right answer and that has involved some rational thought or calculation. It is not a precise value and the level of error may not be known.
