In the disposal of radioactive waste, the containers in which waste is held, the vault in which these are stored, and the immediately surrounding rocks, which prevent the migration of radionuclides, but which provide a level of containment that is expected to fail over some thousands of years. Containment will then be provided by the far-field barrier.
