A centre in Gainsville, Florida, that develops and tests technologies for use in long-duration human space flight. Located in the Department of Environmental Engineering Sciences at the University of Florida, it is a cooperative undertaking between NASA and the university, as well as additional academic and industrial partners. The projects concentrate on the needs of three technical areas defined by NASA: air revitalization, solid-waste recovery, and water recovery. The research concentrates on reducing the mass and volume of hardware, devising low power consumption, and providing for minimum supervision by the crew. ESCSTC also helps find commercial applications for the technologies that it develops.
