An American manufacturer of a wide variety of hardware and software products. Founded in 1884, it was known as National Cash Register Co. until 1974. In 1991 the company was purchased by the AT&T Corporation and was renamed Global Information Solutions. As part of AT&T’s split into three separate companies in 1996, the NCR Corporation was spun off to AT&T shareholders and resumed its original name. NCR’s products include cash registers, semiconductors, automatic teller machines, supermarket scanners, electronic office equipment, and information-processing systems.
