Hindu (Chauhan Rajput) King of Delhi, who died in a brave attempt to resist the establishment of Muslim power in northern India. Until the Muslim invasions, he was preoccupied with defending his territories in Ajmer and Delhi against rival Hindu kings. Although he was victorious in 1192, in his first encounter with the Turkish invader, Muhammad Ghuri, in 1193 he was defeated and killed thus opening the way for the founding of the Delhi sultanate. Prithviraj III has been immortalized in ballads and folk literature as a figure of romance and heroism.
