A diagram used to illustrate the variation of volume and pressure for a substance (see Fig. 44). Spanning a wide range of volumes and pressures, isotherms (lines of constant temperature) are used to illustrate features such as liquid phase, gas phase, and critical point. Developed in the eighteenth century and once known as indicator diagrams, they were used to analyse the behaviour and efficiency of steam engines.
