单词 endemic
释义
endemic

Biology
  • 1. Describing a plant or animal species that is restricted to one or a few localities in its distribution. Endemic species are usually confined to islands and are vulnerable to extinction.

    2. Describing a disease or a pest that is always present in an area. For example, malaria is endemic in parts of Africa.

Geography
  • Occurring within a specified locality; not introduced. Endemism describes the restriction of a species (or other taxonomic group) to a particular geographic region, and is due to factors such as isolation or response to soil or climatic conditions. Giokas et al. (2008) J. Biogeog. 35, 1 outline a technique to identify areas of endemism.
