(contraction of emotion + icon) A combination of punctuation marks, and sometimes other characters, first used in email and intended to convey the mood of the writer; emoticons are also called smileys, regardless of mood. Standard keyboard characters are used to make faces sideways on the line (see table)

A series of typed characters usually used in email messages or postings to a social media forum which indicates some mood or state that is normally conveyed in a face-to-face conversation but which cannot be conveyed in an email. For example, the emoticon: D means that the writer is laughing. Sometimes emojis are described as emoji emoticons.
