A long-baseline interferometer operated by Jodrell Bank Observatory consisting of seven radio telescopes distributed across England. It was opened in 1980 under the name Multi-Element Radio-Linked Interferometer Network (MERLIN); the name was changed to e-MERLIN in 2010, when an upgraded version of the array came into operation, with over ten times the sensitivity of the original. The telescopes are at Jodrell Bank in Cheshire (76-m Lovell Telescope and 25 × 38-m Mark II); Tabley (25-m dish) and Darnhall (25-m dish), both in Cheshire; Knockin (25-m dish) in Shropshire; Defford (25-m dish) in Worcestershire; and Cambridge (32-m dish), added in 1990. The longest baseline is 217 km. The array operates at wavelengths of 23–18 cm, 7.5–3.7 cm, and 1.4–1.2 cm. with a resolution up to 0.01 arcsec.
