The proportion of the volume of a porous body that is not occupied by the body itself. It is usually given as a fraction, percentage, or decimal. The porosity of a packed bed is the ratio of the volume of voids to the total volume of the bed. The value is dependent on the shape and size distribution of the particles, the ratio of the particle size to bed diameter, and the method used for filling the bed. It is usually determined by measuring how much water is used to fill the voids compared with the total volume of the bed. Compare voidage.
