A type of maser in which the operation is based on the stimulated emission of radiation caused by the motion of high-energy electrons moving as in a cyclotron. A full understanding of this type of maser requires the special theory of relativity. There are many practical applications of the device including plasma heating in fusion research and telecommunications. This mechanism of maser emission may account for short intense pulses in solar microwave radiation and for certain ionospheric radio emissions.
