A vehicle that uses an electric motor to provide power to its wheels. These have traditionally been used in rail-based systems, such as trains and trams, where power is provided to the vehicle either by an electrical third rail or by overhead power cables. Battery-powered vehicles have been typically used for short-range, relatively slow journeys, as in the case of motorized wheelchairs. Recent developments, inspired by renewable energy systems, are producing cars powered by rechargeable batteries whose speed and range are comparable to those of cars powered by fossil fuels.
