The ability of a liquid to stay in contact with the surface of a solid. Wetting is possible when the intermolecular forces between the solid and the liquid (adhesion) are greater than the intermolecular forces within the liquid (cohesion). When wetting is possible a drop of liquid spreads and occupies a large area, with its thickness becoming very small.
