A large antelope (family Bovidae), 1.6 m tall at the shoulder and with males weighing up to 1000 kg. Both sexes have spiral horns and a smooth coat apart from a rough, narrow mane along the neck to below the shoulders. They are herbivores, found on the savannah grasslands of Africa. There are two species, the common eland (Taurotragus oryx) and giant eland (T. derbianus).
