Edge effects complicate the analysis of spatial processes. Many formulae relating to spatial processes are affected by the finiteness of the region of interest. For example, suppose we look through a microscope at blood cells. The nearest neighbour to a cell of interest may be very close but out of the field of view. Statistical tests based on the distance to the apparent nearest neighbour must take account of this possibility.
