A wild pig of the genus Phacochoerus (family Suidae) that has very distinctive tusks, larger in the male, a crest along the back, and protective pads (warts) on both sides of the head, below each eye, between the eyes and tusks, and in males near the jaw. Females and young live in family groups; males are usually solitary. Wart hogs are grazers, often kneeling to feed on short grass, but they sometimes eat animal food. There are two species found in sub-Saharan Africa.
