A large, strong bird of prey, with a sharp, hooked bill used to tear flesh, and strong talons used for seizing prey, which ranges according to species from snails and insects to mammals, birds, and snakes, with one group specializing in fish. Most build their nests (eyries) on cliffs or high in tall trees. There are 23 genera with about 60 species, all in the family Accipitridae. Eagles occur worldwide, all but 14 species in Eurasia and Africa.
