NASA's prototype recoverable spacecraft with a delta-winged design, which evolved into the space shuttle. Envisioned in 1958 to follow the experimental X-15 rocket plane, it was designed and developed by NASA, the US Air Force, and the Boeing Company. The Dyna-Soar would be launched into orbit by a Titan III rocket and then glide back to Earth in a ‘dynamic ascent and soaring’. It was never flown, and the project ended in 1969. However, in tests, it proved suitable for flying a large cargo bay, and its delta wings offered better control than normal aircraft designs.
