Chebyshev spent most of his career at St Petersburg U, where he developed a mathematical school with an international reputation (Markov was one of his students). He made major contributions in many branches of mathematics. To statisticians he is best remembered for his work on the weak law of large numbers (see laws of large numbers) and the introduction of polynomials as a means of handling the fitting of a curvilinear regression model (see multiple regression model). A lunar crater is named after him.
