The movement of tectonic plates is expressed in terms of rotations relative to a Euler pole. Such motions during the last 200 million years have been determined mainly from magnetic anomaly patterns in the ocean basins. Determination of older motions is based on palaeomagnetic studies and evidence for continental collisions and separations.
