An instrument that measures the changes with time (waves) of the electric and magnetic fields within the ionized plasma gases produced by the Sun and other stars. There are of two types of plasma waves: electrostatic oscillations similar to sound waves, and electromagnetic waves.

NASA's plasma wave subsystem (PWS), for example, is designed to identify plasma waves by measuring the properties of varying electric fields over a certain frequency range.
