Physics

  • One of the tiny dots that make up an image on the screen of a computer’s visual-display unit (VDU) or on some types of television receiver; it is short for picture element. Screen resolution is determined by the number of pixels (the more pixels, the better the resolution), and each pixel is given a brightness and colour. A typical high-resolution colour VDU screen has a 1024×768 array of pixels.

Astronomy

  • An individual element in an array which makes up an electronic image, as produced, for example, by a charge-coupled device. The size of the pixels in a detector governs its resolution. The word is a contraction of ‘picture element’.

Statistics

  • An area, often rectangular, for which a value has been recorded. The term was coined in connection with the analysis of pictures, such as satellite images of ground conditions, or medical scans of parts of the human body. Each dot in such a picture is a pixel conveying information. A voxel is the three-dimensional equivalent, representing a volume of space for which a value has been recorded.

  • Derived from picture element. One of the elements in an array that is holding pictorial information. It contains data representing either directly or indirectly the brightness and, where appropriate, colour of a small region of the image. See also digital image.

    2. In remote sensing, a single sample of data in an image. A pixel has a spatial attribute corresponding to its location within the image and the area of ground represented, and a spectral attribute corresponding to the intensity of a particular wavelength. See also pixel colour.
