An assembly of different species of plants growing together in a particular habitat; the floral component of an ecosystem. The concept of community can be applied to a range of scales from a small pond to the Amazon rain forest. Kent et al. (1997) PPG 21, 3 summarize developments in the conceptualization of the plant community. Burns (2007) J. Biogeog. 34, in a study of the assembly of an island plant community off the west coast of Vancouver Island, BC, finds that his results provide evidence for both the deterministic and individualistic viewpoints on community structure, and suggests that both chance and determinism contribute to the assembly of this island plant community. Duckworth et al. (2000) PPG 24, 4 argue that plant functional types can aid in the understanding of the assembly and stability of plant communities.
