In 1842 he described the Doppler shift for sound waves, and gave the mathematical equation for the variation of pitch with the velocity of the source. He realized that the effect would occur with all wave motions, including light. However, he incorrectly believed that the colours of stars indicated their motions towards or away from the Earth.
