known for his work on stochastic processes. Doob entered Harvard U intending to study physics because of his passion for radio. Switching to mathematics, he obtained his AB in 1930, his AM in 1931 and his PhD in 1932, specializing in analytic functions. After a short spell at Columbia U with Hotelling, he joined the faculty of U Illinois in 1935. One of his first research students was Blackwell. He was President of the IMS in 1950 and President of the AMS in 1963. He was the 1965 COPSS Rietz Lecturer. He was a member of the NAS and received the National Medal of Science in 1979. He was elected an Honorary Fellow of the RSS in 1987.
