An optical observatory at an altitude of 230 m in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, founded in 1916 and operated by the Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics. Its main instrument is the 72-inch (1.85-m) Plaskett reflector, named after the Observatory’s first director, J. S. Plaskett, opened in 1918 and given a new mirror in 1974. Other instruments include the 1.22-m McKellar reflector, opened in 1962 and given a new mirror in 1985. The DAO also houses the Canadian Astronomy Data Centre.
