The interaction of electromagnetic radiation with a negative ion to detach an electron from the ion and leave a neutral atom or molecule, i.e.
$M^{-} + h ν \to M + e^{-}$
where hν represents a photon of frequency ν and h is the Planck constant. The mechanism in this process is exactly the same as for photoionization of a neutral species. The ionization potential of the negative ion is equal to the electron affinity of the atom or molecule.
