A semiconductor in which the maximum energy of the valence band and the minimum energy of the conduction band are located at the same value of momentum in momentum space, so providing a direct energy gap. This permits radiative transitions between the conduction and valence bands to occur, resulting in the emission of electromagnetic radiation. Gallium arsenide and other compound semiconductors are direct-gap semiconductors. See also indirect-gap semiconductor; energy bands.
